Maine AG clears officers in 3 separate police shootings - Bangor Daily News

Image
Police officers in three separate shootings in Pittsfield, Lewiston and Topsham were justified in their use of deadly force, the Office of the Maine Attorney General said Wednesday.   Two of the shootings resulted in the deaths of the suspects — Gregory Lasselle, 27, of Pittsfield and Kourtney Sherwood, 37, of Auburn — three days apart earlier this year, in February. Kyle Edwards, then 26, of Auburn was shot by Lewiston police in January 2021 but survived the gunshot wound. The Maine attorney general's office reviews every case involving police use of deadly force to determine if the officer was justified. The office has never found an officer unjustified. The incident that led to Lasselle's death began on the afternoon of Feb. 24 when his parents came to the Pittsfield police station to report that he was out of control and threatening suicide, according to the report. Officers ...

Andrew Legare, Elmira Star-Gazette DAYTONA BEACH — Although heavy storms played havoc with the schedule of this past weekend's marathon rain-delayed running of the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway, the outlook on the event's impact on the area's hotel business was overwhelmingly sunny. With NASCAR fans chased indoors because of the bad weather, hotels such as the 744-room Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort, the area's largest, saw big increases in guests at hotel restaurants and bars as well as sold-out rooms, said Jim Berkley, general manager. This year's Dive7 Festival puts the spotlight on the underwater scene of Zamboanguita and Dauin When we talk about the beauty of the Philippines, distinct tourist spots come to mind. There's the picturesque Mayon Volcano, the old-world charm of Intramuros, and, of course, the crystal beaches of Boracay, Siargao, and Palawan. These sites have made their way to international travel lists, making the country a true paradise for any wanderer. But did you know that the Philippines is also a champion when it comes to being a diving destination? Since 2019, the World Travel Awards has hailed the Philippines as the top spot for diving. A testament to this is the underwater scene of Central Visayas. To spotlight its submerged wonders, the Department of Tourism-Central Visayas (DOT7) held the second edition of the Dive7 Festival at the municipalities of Zamboanguita and Dauin in Negros Oriental from July 28 to 31.  For three days, participants of the festival joined in...

Record-breaking WSOP Circuit Event concludes at Harrah's Cherokee - Cherokee One Feather

Image
Brett Bader claims Main Event title, $364,104 top prize, and a seat in the 2023 Tournament of Champions. (Harrah's Cherokee photo) It was a record-breaking return to Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort for the World Series of Poker's (WSOP) 2022/23 Circuit season, its first of four stops, as a record-setting field of 1,558 entries were recorded through two starting flights and a $2,360,370 prize pool was generated. After a prize pool was calculated, 238 players were able to take a piece of it, but it was Brett Bader who walked away with the lion's share, as he claimed the Harrah's $1,700 Main Event title that came with a $364,104 top prize, and a seat in the 2023 Tournament of Champions. "It hasn't really sunk in, to be honest," Bader stated after his victory. "I haven't been here in a few years, and the last time I was I finished runner-up to Leif Force in the $1k." Bader came into the final day at near the bottom half of the cou...

These Cities — Including 3 in the U.S. — Have the Most Expensive Tourist Taxes in the World, Study Shows - Travel + Leisure

Image
The Hawaiian city of Honolulu charges the highest tourist tax in the world, adding hundreds of extra dollars to travelers' weekly budgets. Honolulu typically charges $62.85 per night per person, which can vary depending on the cost of a room, according to a Money.co.uk study published this month and shared with Travel + Leisure . That equates to more than $439 in tax for a seven night stay. The study found the reason for the exorbitant charge is a combination of Hawaii's 10.25% "transient accommodations tax" and Honolulu's additional 3% surcharge. The study, which looked at the average tourist tax charged per night in the most visited cities around the world, found the three most expensive cities for tourist taxes were in the United States. San Francisco took the No. 2 spot, charging $36 per night, or $251.99 per week-long stay, while Los Angeles came in at No. 3, charging $23.49, or $164.40 for a week. Amsterdam, which took the No. 4...

Hotel review Palazzo di Varignana, Bologna, Italy - Great British Life

Image
Published: 4:50 PM August 24, 2022 In the second part of a tour of Tuscany, editor Richard Young visits a health resort in the Bologna hills. It was raining when we arrived at Bologna Central - the impressive 1930s station on the fast line from Florence where it had been sunny just 40 minutes earlier. So it wasn't until the next morning, our taxi having driven half an hour into the cloud-filled hills to the south-east of the city, that we could see exactly where we were.  And that was perched on a hillside, looking out for miles across the Emilia-Romagna countryside, land rich in agriculture and history. We are at Palazzo di Varignana, a wellbeing resort based around a restored early 18th century villa, and right off, the ambition of this place is clear. Owner, fintech businessman, Carlo Gherardi has a love...

Adrian Inn purchase completed - The Daily Telegram

Image
ADRIAN — A key step toward providing more stable, temporary housing to displaced Riverview Terrace tenants was completed Friday. The city of Adrian closed Friday on the purchase of the Adrian Inn, 1575 W. Maumee St., which has been one of three area motels where about 100 residents of the condemned apartment building are staying. The motel will serve as transitional housing until longer-term housing solutions are found, a news release from the city said. The city commission agreed Aug. 1 to buy the motel for $800,000, with the money coming from the city's capital projects fund. The motel had been for sale since before the city declared it a public nuisance in June 2021 because of repeated complaints of criminal behavior there. The city had been involved in litigation with the previous owners since the nuisance declaration. The city bought the inn because of a shortage of available, affordable housing in Lenawee County and neighboring areas. This is at least the secon...
