At 30 Stories High: The Luxor Las Vegas Pyramid Is Just As Large ... - TheTravel

Las Vegas is one remarkable city. Vegas is a city rising out of the desert that has come to be the most famous Sin City in the world. It is home to many of the world's most famous casino hotels - many of which have gone to extreme lengths with their opulent themes. One of the most lavish and famous is Caeswars Palace, as well as The Palazzo and The Venetian (where guests can enjoy gondola rides).

Another of the most outstanding casino hotels is Luxor Las Vegas (perhaps a bit of an odd choice for a name, as the pyramids and Sphinx are located in Giza). The massive painted replica of the Sphinx and the ginormous hotel built in the shape of a pyramid is enough to catch any eye.

What To Know About Luxor Las Vegas - Ancient Egypt In Las Vegas

Luxor Las Vegas's main building is 30 stories tall (or 106.7 meters) and is located on the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip. The casino has over 2,000 slot machines and 87 table games. It opened in 1993 and has expanded and modernized a few times since then. It now has over 4,400 rooms and is the 3rd largest hotel in Las Vegas.

The pyramid is not alone. See the 110-foot-tall replica of the Great Sphinx of Giza guarding it.

One of the most remarkable features of the black Luxor Pyramid is the Luxor Sky Beam. It is the strongest beam of light in the world that is projected into the night sky. It can be seen hundreds of miles away.

The appearance of the Luxor Pyramid is in stark contrast to the pyramids of Egypt. Originally, the Pyramids of Egypt looked different from how they appear today; they were coated in limestone that made them gleam white. The Luxor Pyramid is instead a glossy, jet-black pyramid.

Luxor Las Vegas Inside: Anything But An Ancient Egyptian Pyramid In Its Interiors

Its interior continues the Ancient Egyptian theme and has ancient Egyptian iconography, statues, murals, and even a full-scale replica of King Tut's tomb and its many riches (the only such attraction outside of Egypt). The ancient Egyptian pyramids have very underwhelming interiors made up of a few narrow passageways and small chambers - some of these were very elaborately blocked to prevent tomb raiders. The pharaohs would probably not have been happy with Indiana Jones poking about in their tombs.

Unlike the stone pyramids of Egypt, the Luxor Pyramid in Las Vegas has a tad more facilities. The Vegas Luxor Pyramid has four swimming pools and whirlpools, retail stores, a large convention space, and even a wedding chapel. Naturally, it is also home to nightclubs. It has a number of shows and entertainment options, too. For example, one show, FANTASY, is the biggest tease on The Strip, with tickets starting at $39.00.

When it was built, the Luxor Pyramid had the largest atrium in the world as measured by volume.

The Las Vegas Luxor Pyramid - The Third Or Fourth-Tallest Pyramid In The World

Naturally, while the Luxor Pyramid is as large in dimensions as some of the pyramids of Egypt, it is not as massive. The pyramids are basically massive piles of solid stone; however, Luxor Pyramid is constructed out of reinforced concrete with a steel skeleton. The Luxor Pyramid in Vegas is the fourth-tallest pyramid in the world or third, excluding the Transamerica Pyramid - a skyscraper in San Francisco.

The Luxor Pyramid is around three-quarters the size (dimensions) of the Great Pyramid of Giza. It is similar in its size to other famous pyramids of Egypt - like the Red Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid (the Bent Pyramid is a great example of the process by which the Egyptians learn to construct massive pyramids). It is virtually identical to the height of the Red Pyramid - the third-highest Egyptian pyramid.

Height Of The Tallest Pyramids

  • Great Pyramid of Giza: 138.5 Meters or 454 Feet
  • Pyramid of Khafre: 136.4 Meters or 448 Feet
  • Luxor Pyramid: 106.7 Meters or 350 Feet
  • Red Pyramid: 105 Meters or 344 Feet
  • Bent Pyramid: 104.71 Meters or 344 Feet
  • Tonina Pyramid: 74 Meters or 243 (Mayan Pyramid)

Still, the size comparison may be a little unfair, as the pyramids of Egypt have significantly eroded over the years (and their outer layer of limestone has been removed). For example, the Great Pyramid originally stood at a height of 146.6 meters or 481 feet and was the tallest man-made structure for 3,800 years. But now, it has lost 18 meters or 60 feet of its former height and is presently 138.5 meters or 454.4 feet tall.
