His Dark Materials Season 3 Video: James McAvoy's Lord Asriel Returns - Screen Rant
The first look at His Dark Materials season 3 reveals the return of James McAvoy's Lord Asriel. Adapted from the Philip Pullman book trilogy of the same name, His Dark Materials stars, alongside McAvoy, Logan's Dafne Keen as show lead Lyra Belacqua, Ruth Wilson as Lyra's mother Marisa Coulter, and Amir Wilson as Lyra's close friend Will Parry. While season 2 focuses on Will's quest to discover the truth about his missing father, season 3 will bring both Lyra and Will's story arcs to a climax with a season based on the third and final His Dark Materials book, The Amber Spyglass.
While on the surface, His Dark Materials may appear to be a typical high fantasy adventure, complete with armored polar bears and witches, Pullman's series is one of the most celebrated pieces of fiction of the 20th century. The series flows between several parallel universes, with much of its time spent in Lyra's complex world, where humans are intrinsically linked to creatures known as daemons. While season 1 focused on Lyra's hunt to save her friend from a gang of child catchers, season 2 expanded into Pullman's more profound narrative plot lines, including a deeper look at the meaning behind the mysterious substance known as Dust. Season 3 promises to close the show out with a bang, with a recent casting announcement confirming His Dark Materials will include the tiny humanoid assassins known as Gallivespians, who play a critical role in the trilogy's end-game.
Now, as featured in a trailer for a selection of upcoming HBO Max shows, a short clip confirms the return of Lyra's father, Lord Asriel, who was notably missing from the show's season 2. The quick shot shows Asriel staring at something off-screen, while he stands in what looks to be his fort, as featured in The Amber Spyglass. The first look at the return of Asriel is also accompanied by a blink-and-miss-it look at Lyra and Marisa Coulter. Check out the video below:

While the show has taken liberties with the book series on occasion, it has managed to stay relatively close to its source material, which explains McAvoy's absence throughout season 2, as Asriel doesn't show up in His Dark Materials' second book, The Subtle Knife. But, while it made sense to book fans that the character was missing, there was still talk of a McAvoy-centric episode at some point in season 2, but COVID travel restrictions eventually led to the scrapping of these plans. Regardless, McAvoy's excellent performance as the enigmatic Asriel is part of what makes the show so great, and with big things in the character's arc due in season 3, it's great to see McAvoy back on set.
Despite the show's success, there are no current plans to continue His Dark Materials past season 3, despite Pullman working on the third book in his Book of Dust trilogy, which expands on Lyra's universe. But, as parts of these novels have featured in the show's current run, it makes a full season based on Pullman's expanded literature unlikely. If, however, this is the end for His Dark Materials, it will still solidify itself as one of the best adaptions of popular literature in history, far exceeding 2007's big-budget The Golden Compass movie, which failed to capture the magic of the book series. His Dark Materials season 3 begins streaming next year.
