Throwback Thursday: Remembering the Howard Johnson’s tragedy - wnky.com

Image
January 12, 2023 Twenty-seven years ago this week, the Bowling Green community was still reeling from the aftermath of the infamous fire that burned down the Howard Johnson's motel on the 31-W Bypass. We were reminded of this story by Karen Foley, a City of Bowling Green employee in Neighborhood & Community Services, who was working the Bowling Green police dispatch on that tragic night, January 6, 1996. The Howard Johnson's motel was once the Holiday Inn, home of the Holidome and Kona Kai Disco Lounge in the 1960s and 70s. We've shared the history of Holiday Inns in Bowling Green and some of the Holidome story. The Holiday Inn sold to new ownership by the 190s, was adopted by the Howard Johnson's brand flag, and fell into a state of disrepair. The Bowling Green Daily News, Associated Press, Washington Post, and countless other news outlets reported that the property was a safety hazard, without a funct...

This Caribbean Island Has a Famous Luxury Hotel, a Waterfront ... - Travel + Leisure

Image
Saint Martin is a unique gem among picturesque Caribbean destinations: one wondrous island split between two separate countries. Dutch Sint Maarten and French Saint-Martin have coexisted peacefully here since the Partition Treaty of 1648. (No wonder they call it the "Friendly Island.") Nearly all of its 2 million annual visitors fly into the Dutch side, home of Princess Juliana International Airport (and its world-famous beachfront runway). Though most of the main tourist attractions are within French borders, wherever you end up on island you won't be far from pristine surf, boutique beachfront hotels, and colorful cafes and bars teeming with local flavor. Here's how to map out your ideal St. Martin getaway. The Best Times to Visit St. Martin With its positioning along the eastern edge of the Caribbean Sea, St. Martin enjoys tropical weather all year long. There are actually only two seasons here: dry season and wet season. The former lasts from Decemb...

Hearing on charges in city’s deadliest fire set for February - Las Vegas Review-Journal

Image
A long-delayed preliminary hearing on criminal charges against the owner of the former Alpine Motel Apartments downtown, the site of the deadliest blaze in Las Vegas history, is set to resume next month. Justice Court Judge Ann Zimmerman on Wednesday scheduled the proceeding to start Feb. 21, more than 2½ years after the Clark County district attorney's office filed a criminal complaint and issued an arrest warrant for former Alpine owner Adolfo Orozco. The prosecution will need only three days to present its case, Chief Deputy District Attorney Leah Beverly told Zimmerman, who added an extra day, March 6, at the request of defense lawyer Dominic Gentile, who represented Orozco in court Wednesday. "It's not going to take us three days," Beverly told the judge. Beverly briefly talked about the case after Wednesday's session. "We've been on pause for two years," she said. "We just set a date today to resume what we started." Out...

Best Texas state parks: Tell us your favorite to mark centennial year - Austin American-Statesman

Image
I can still smell the campfires. A good part of my youth was spent hiking, swimming, camping, canoeing and pursuing other outdoor activities. What better way to entertain six curious and rambunctious Barnes kids than to load us into the station wagon; strap some gear onto the luggage rack; and head to the nearest state park? I spent just as much time at Boy Scout camps, which introduced me to the Hill Country by way of pristine El Rancho Cima, soon to become a Hays County park, thanks in part to the efforts of the Nature Conservancy of Texas. My experiences in this rugged landscape on the Blanco River played a key role in my permanent removal from the Gulf Coastal Plains to the crystal streams, limestone trails and green hills of Central Texas. State parks have lured me back to nature again and again. And this year, the park system turns 100. More: Who are the Wends? Find out at one of the best history museums in Texas In 1923, the state park board of directors met for the first time. ...

Historic Preservation Committee mulls downtown hotel plan - Petaluma Argus Courier

Image
Renderings of a new hotel proposed for downtown Petaluma were seen by members of the Historic and Cultural Preservation Committee for the first time recently, allowing the committee to consider whether the project meets the design standards of the city's historic downtown district. An application for the project, dubbed "Hotel Weaver," was submitted to city officials in April 2022 and calls for a 93-room hotel, a 1,230-square-foot public event space, and a 5,514-square-foot bar and restaurant – with the latter two touted as places for everyone in the community to enjoy – to be built in the empty lot at the corner of B Street and Petaluma Boulevard. "(We're) trying to achieve our goal of human connection," said Mike Jolly, senior vice president of EKN Development Group, at the Jan. 10 meeting. "We build in special places, and Petaluma's a special place." The hotel's rendering includes a public art installment calling for an egg-shaped ...

Las Vegas is about to have a banner year — here's why you should book a trip right now - The Points Guy

Image
Oh, Las Vegas. Love it or hate it, it's a place people always find themselves talking about. That makes sense considering it's one of the world's entertainment capitals, an epicenter for bachelor and bachelorette parties, and a continuously evolving city. The reality is that Sin City is hard to keep up with. Major resorts are constantly changing hands and loyalty programs — or being torn down to build something bigger and better. The world's biggest stars keep adding (or rescheduling) residencies. Major sporting events are popping up left and right, and over-the-top attractions seem to be announced daily. Speaking of sporting events, expect the city to change more dramatically than ever this year since Super Bowl LVIII will take place at Vegas' recently opened Allegiant Stadium next year — a huge win for the city and its many, many resorts and entertainment outlets. To help cut through the clutter, we've rounded up some of the biggest developments changing th...
